{"id":111,"date":"2011-05-24T18:16:51","date_gmt":"2011-05-24T22:16:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/giantpachinkomachineofdoom.com\/?p=111"},"modified":"2011-05-25T11:36:11","modified_gmt":"2011-05-25T15:36:11","slug":"some-kind-of-future-space-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/giantpachinkomachineofdoom.com\/?p=111","title":{"rendered":"Some Kind of Future Space World&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It feels good when technology <em><strong>just works<\/strong><\/em>. \u00c2\u00a0Back in February, I bought a real goddamn RAID card, five 2TB hard drives, and a tray-less 3-to-5 SATA2 hot swap bay enclosure.<\/p>\n<p>Then, last week, my RAID card made a horrible shrieking alarm sound that made me think the apartment was on fire. \u00c2\u00a0Turned out it was just my RAID5 array&#8230; \u00c2\u00a0One of the 2TB drives failed, hard. \u00c2\u00a0I&#8217;m used to motherboard RAID losing sync with drives if they time out, and claiming the array failed, so I gave it the benefit of the doubt and attempted a rebuild. \u00c2\u00a0It failed to rebuild.<\/p>\n<p>So, first thing I did after I got the money together was bought another drive from Newegg. \u00c2\u00a0Then I did an RMA on the original drive through Western Digital. \u00c2\u00a0It was a very painless experience; Enter the serial number, enter the reason for requesting an RMA, choose between cross-ship, and normal return\u00c2\u00a0<em>(Normal, since I already had a drive en route from Newegg.)<\/em>, and then pay $6 for a UPS return label.<\/p>\n<p>New drive arrives from Newegg (this morning), and we set about what needs to be done.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Unpack new HDD.<\/li>\n<li>Tell the RAID card to &#8216;unplug&#8217; the failed drive.<\/li>\n<li>Unlock and open the corresponding slot on the enclosure.<\/li>\n<li>Remove failed drive, replace with new drive.<\/li>\n<li>Wait for RAID manager to recognize new drive, and then initialize it.<\/li>\n<li>Select damaged array, click &#8216;Add Drive&#8217;, select newly initialized replacement. \u00c2\u00a0Rebuild begins automatically.<\/li>\n<li>Pack failed HDD in static bag and shipper from replacement drive, apply UPS shipping label over label on Newegg box.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Holy shit, son. \u00c2\u00a0It&#8217;s like we&#8217;re livin&#8217; in some kind of <strong><em>FUTURE SPACE WORLD<\/em><\/strong>, where shit just works like it&#8217;s supposed to!<\/p>\n<p>Now I&#8217;m gonna go on to the gritty details of the hardware, with a couple pictures, after the jump. \u00c2\u00a0So stay tuned if that sort of thing interests you. \u00c2\u00a0<em>(I guarantee premium hardware porn, you betcha!)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->For years, I&#8217;ve suffered the bullshit of on-board RAID controllers. \u00c2\u00a0My first big RAID array was a RAID5 of 4x500GB SATA2 drives. \u00c2\u00a0The RAID chipset on my ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe was decent enough, and the array survived long enough to have its 1.5TB of data transferred to a single mirrored 1.5TB drive, so I could replace the array with 6 1.5TB drives. \u00c2\u00a0<em>(Out of 8 that I bought, because that was all that fit, and spares are good.)<\/em> But then, one of those 1.5TB drives failed&#8230;and that&#8217;s when I found out that the RAID tools for that motherboard, aren&#8217;t compatible with Windows 7. \u00c2\u00a0Meaning I can&#8217;t rebuild the array, despite having two cold-spares, unless I install XP or something. \u00c2\u00a0Fuck. \u00c2\u00a0That. \u00c2\u00a0Noise.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/media.giantpachinkomachineofdoom.com\/blog\/2011-02\/images\/raidcard.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"RocketRAID 2340\" src=\"http:\/\/media.giantpachinkomachineofdoom.com\/blog\/2011-02\/images\/raidcard.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"283\" height=\"189\" \/><\/a>With tax refund time quickly approaching, I decided to get a real RAID card like I&#8217;d intended to for years, but always ended up not being able to afford. \u00c2\u00a0And it just so happened that Newegg was having a great sale on 2TB Western Digital HDDs. \u00c2\u00a0I settled on a RocketRAID 2340, a nice little card that only cost like $400, but could take 16 SATA2 drives, and supported things like on-line RAID expansion, and all that happy stuff you expect from a several-hundred-dollar card. \u00c2\u00a0It even has individual Power\/Access\/Failure LED headers for ALL SIXTEEN DRIVES. \u00c2\u00a0To top it off, the cables, 1 Mini-SAS to 4 SATA2, are sleeved and labeled. \u00c2\u00a0Very nice. \u00c2\u00a0It&#8217;s really a great card for the relatively low price.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/media.giantpachinkomachineofdoom.com\/blog\/2011-02\/images\/over9000gb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"IT'S OVER 9000 (Gigabytes)\" src=\"http:\/\/media.giantpachinkomachineofdoom.com\/blog\/2011-02\/images\/over9000gb.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"311\" height=\"208\" \/><\/a>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136514\">drives<\/a> were a great find. \u00c2\u00a0Normally $99.99, they were currently on sale: $10 off instant, plus $20 Mail-In Rebate, for each drive, limit 5. \u00c2\u00a0Yes please! \u00c2\u00a0So they ended up only being $69.99 each. \u00c2\u00a0<em>(Point of interest, when I ordered a replacement FOUR MONTHS LATER the normal price had come down to $79.99.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817994077\">drive enclosure<\/a> is nifty too. \u00c2\u00a0It was cheap <em>($74.99)<\/em>, tray-less, five HDD slots in three 5.25&#8243; bays, and did I mention it was cheap? \u00c2\u00a0It employs an interesting mechanism where opening the slot cover acts as a lever which works a geared mechanism which in turn unseats the drive. \u00c2\u00a0Sadly, the gear on one of the slots had a manufacturing defect in the plastic which caused a tooth to break off when I was trying it out, and I had to return it. \u00c2\u00a0But because it&#8217;s Newegg, I had my replacement not two days later. \u00c2\u00a0There aren&#8217;t any problems with the new one. \u00c2\u00a0<em>(As I imagined, since the other four slots worked flawlessly.)<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It feels good when technology just works. \u00c2\u00a0Back in February, I bought a real goddamn RAID card, five 2TB hard drives, and a tray-less 3-to-5 SATA2 hot swap bay enclosure.
